Russell E. Nixon
Russell (Russ) Nixon began fishing tournaments in the spring of 1986, when his older brother asked him to be an alternate in a federation tournamnt on Smith Mountain Lake. Smith Mountain Lake is located along the county boundary of Bedford County and Franklin County, Virginia. Smith Mountain is a deep water lake used for power generation by American Electric Power.
Russ has been a member of BASS, FLW and most recently a member of the Fishers of Men Tournanment Trail. He also is a member of Castaway Bass Club.
Russ gave up tournament fishing in the mid 90s while pursuing his carreer as a licensed surveyor. In January of 2005 Russ obtained his license to practice land surveying and started his own company, Nixon Land Surveying, LLC (www.nixonlsec.com). Russ also purchased a new bass boat a Nitro 901 CDX and this purchase started a new goal.
Since his boat purchase he has fished 100s of local tournamnts on Smith Mountain Lake (SML), competed in BFL tournaments and also competed in BASS Northern Open tournaments. He has obtained sponserships from Cheeseburger Jigs, New Cabinets, Nixon Land Surveying, LLC, Outkast Tackle, Arrington Insurance, and SFVU Business Group.
His sponsorships have helped him take his tournament fishing to a higher level. Russ understands that the sponsors need to have as much exposure as possible to warrent their giving him the sponsorship oppertunity.
One of the biggest goals Russ has is to introduce young people to the fishing, you can find him helping out with youth events across Virginia, whether it is at his church or at a youth camp Russ is willing to take the time to help teach a young person the differnt techincal aspects of fishing.
